Media is one of the many communicational tools that can send information or events around the world to people and can affect them . Sometimes it is called (The Forth since it has to do with the common main storm ). Media in Oman like any media in the other counters has long story and levels of development. In this essay, I will cover in further details about mass media in Oman in the past, current state of Oman, and the challenges of mass media in Oman.
Media in Oman in the past was very limited and it was very simple rather primitive. In my opinion, people at that time didn’t have the access to information equally; some people had radio at home and some didn’t, so this was a barrier for them. After HM Sultan Qaboos started ruling Oman, the media started and the first type of media was Radio. There was only one radio station in Muscat and which was then developed and another one was opened in Salalah. In 1974,The first Omani station started broadcasting in Muscat.
Mass media in Oman now is totally different than before because it faced lots of changes that made it consides with the new media era . .These changes are for example, kinds or sorts of programmed that are broadcast, hour for broadcasted and the sorts of newspaper that are publish every day. All these things enable the mass media in Oman to have a good reputation between watchers, readers , listeners and society . Moreover, government seeks to a achieve more good performance . These changes are identified here step by step.
The mass media programs is shown in different stations whether they are reading, listening and watching have many private objectives for person or even for society. There are many great programs that aim to make the individual and society more sensible and knowledgeable about what is happening around the world. For example, a TV program called(Here Is Oman, presented by Khalid AL-Zadjali) .It shows events and activities that happen in Oman. Also it discusses some things that are important for the citizens and the society. Moreover, there are another program that T.V shows which is called (Good morning Oman) that discusses some world issues and changes points of views and it then makes people and society more close to the events that occur around the world. All of those programmes prove that media in Oman has completely changed. The Sultanate not only improved the sort of programmes, but also built new studios and opened new channels. Most of these channels care for the Omani youths because they are the largest category between the Omani people. Furthermore, these channels contain different programms and sections that are appropriate with this large category . we do not forget or ignore the radio station courtesy of the programs that has a role in community service. For example, program (Marahib)is very well known between people because it discusses the issues that face the citizens. That program makes a link between the government and the citizens. Journalism is the important part in mass media in Oman that covers the national and international events around the world in order to support the mass media in Oman. In 1997 , Oman press and publish establishment was established by the Royal Decree No 43/97 . It has financially and administratively independent and that financial consider general financial. This institution produces two newspapers (Oman and Oman observer) and some other magazines . Also their are another newspaper and magazines for private sector like: Al Watan newspaper and Shabiba.
Mass media in any country in the world is always surrounded by a number of setbacks. Media in Oman as any other country has such challenges. First of all, media does not have freedom to tell the audience the reality and what exactly occurs in the world. Thus the law of press and establishing which issued by the Royal Decree 48/84 states that the press publishing that is produced by the ministries and the general institutions must be monitored by the Ministry of Information .In this way, media in Oman lacks the freedom that enables it to express the various events freely with no constrains. For example, news are not allowed to say much abut the political documents, situations or even matters. They also are not allowed to criticize His Majesty anymore. The second challenge is the financial support from the government. This means that media in Oman is in demand of having a financial support. This is so important in order to build new studios, run new programmes, and to establish a numbers of channels that include so many programmes in different fields of knowledge. In my point of view, media with no financial support is no longer a capable media. In this aspect, Ministry of Media should do as possible as it can do to provide media, with it’s different branches, the essential economic supply. This is a great process in the way of developing the mass media so that it coincides with the changes in the international media in the world wide. The third issue that the mass media faces is the way that people see this media. Sometimes, they are not aware of the importance of the media in their life. For example, Darayish programme does not discuss the problems that relate to the society which led it to be criticized. In this way, what I think is that government has to deal with this issue by enlighten people what the importances of mass media are. No one can ignore the prominent role that the media plays nowadays. A good example that shows how people pay no attention for media is most of people do not watch daily news neither the local nor the international one.
To sum up, mass media in Oman has totally changed to the best by the righteous orders of HM Sultan Qaboos. It passes through several stages and levels until it stands as it is now. Many programmes, newspapers, and channels have been produced because of the improvements in media in Oman.
