Newspaper Newspaper called “fourth authority” in most country. It’s discussed impotent subject for people and issues more than other type of media. Newspaper in Oman don’t play same role newspaper in most country because law and Self-censorship.
In Oman there are four daily newspapers by Arabic language. It are Oman, ALwatane, ALshabiba and azamne. Also, there are English newspaper but, it’s not popular because language and it’s for Indian in Oman. Also, there is weekly newspaper and in most this newspaper has specific subject such as ALmaliab for sport and Ashrahet for culture.
Most of newspaper in Oman for The private sector But the direction for this newspaper same of government newspaper. The reason law, Self-censorship and relationship between government and newspaper Editor and this relationship Control by useful between them. Newspaper get money from government advantages and government get beautiful picture in newspaper. The result newspaper Weak Not Criticizes government and most area in newspaper to advantages.
The law Restrict freedom and effect by newspaper. Newspaper can’t discuss about many subject because law. For example Hereditary rule, Racism in Oman, freedom in Oman, ect.
The Self-censorship effect in level of newspaper writer afraid from write in subject government don’t like discuss in it. For example story happened with journalist woke with Oman observe write report about Kidnapping three Indian woman from Muscate airport but the editor Rejected publish report because he afraid from government angry. Also, in Oman newspaper don’t has Credibility In write for example ALsabiba editor write about healthy of monastery and didn’t play role for decrease H1N1 and after one day write Article thanks healthy of monastery for role to decrease H1N1. What the reason for change opinion in one day!!!!? We can call that lack of credibility. Also, in other issues didn’t talk about Trafficking in human beings trafficking in human beings before government Reply to Americana report. So, when talked about that write same opinion government without Credibility and transparent. Also, there are relationships between government and editor newspaper and this relationship sometime don’t formula it’s verbal. For example what happened with Mohammed AL Riame when talked in ALalam channel in program about freedom in Oman before that Mohammed write in Oman newspaper daily article called Ashraket but when talked with ALalam channel the editor didn’t publish article Mohammed and Prevention from write in newspaper. In report for “reporter without Border” talked about Matter verbal to editor newspaper to don’t publish articles Mohammed AL-Ruami but he new writes in internet. The government used Matter verbal because can’t use law because not there any item Prevent same Mohammed status from write.
There are future challenge and the first challenge is law I think the must change this law and other challenge will solve. Also, must change purposes of government from media.
